Inflatable Tower Promises Easy Access to Outer Space

Inflatable Tower Promises Easy Access to Outer Space: Discovery News: "An inflatable tower nine miles tall and tethered to a mountain top could cut the cost to launch spacecraft, reduce the need for geostationary communications satellites, and improve cell phone signals.

'This structure could be made of commercially available materials,' said Brendan Quine, who, along with Raj Seth and George Zhu at York University in Toronto, Canada, wrote an article detailing their tower in the journal Acta Astronautica.

The tower itself would be 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) tall, 230 meters (754 feet) across, and weigh approximately 800,000 tons, or about twice the weight of the world's largest supertanker when fully inflated with a variety of gasses, including helium."

Keeping the Gender of a 2-Year-Old Secret

Keeping the Gender of a 2-Year-Old Secret - Motherlode Blog - NYTimes.com: "During last week’s discussion of whether couples choose to learn the sex of their baby before he or she is born, a number of you said you wanted to keep the secret as long as possible, because the moment people hear “boy” or “girl” they begin to make assumptions about a child.

One couple in Sweden decided to take that logic a few steps further, and are refusing to tell anyone whether their toddler is a boy or a girl."

Flight diverted after passenger undresses in seat

Flight diverted after passenger undresses in seat : "ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A cross-country US Airways flight was diverted to Albuquerque after a male passenger removed his clothing mid-flight. Dan Jiron, a spokesman for the Albuquerque airport, said 50-year-old Keith Wright of New York disrobed Tuesday while sitting in his seat in the back of the aircraft. He said Wright was unresponsive when a flight attendant asked him repeatedly to get dressed and refused to be covered with a blanket.

Jiron said law enforcement employees who were passengers on the plane helped subdue and handcuff Wright before the flight landed. The FBI said Wright is in federal custody on a charge of interfering with flight crew members and attendants.

A US Airways spokeswoman said the plane from Charlotte continued on to Los Angeles after Wright's arrest."
